More About Penman Sedgwick

On 1st July 2013 Penman Johnson Solicitors and Sedgwick Kelly LLP became Penman Sedgwick LLP Solicitors.

Penman Sedgwick LLP has thus evolved from one of the oldest solicitors’ practices in Watford, and is now one of the leading solicitors’ practices in Hertfordshire.

Sedgwick Kelly LLP was able  trace its roots back to 1836 when John Sedgwick founded the firm that became known as Sedgwick Turner in 1875, when Henry Moreton Turner joined the firm. It was variously known as Sedgwick Turner & Walker, Sedgwick Turner & Oddie, and Sedgwick Turner Sworder & Wilson during the period from 1882 until 1985 when its name reverted to Sedgwick Turner.

Sedgwick Kelly LLP was itself the product of a merger in 1996, when Sedgwick Turner merged with Kelly Nichols & Blayney – another Watford firm with a long established presence in the town, and which was originally known as Camp & Ellis, then Norman E Kelly & Son, before changing its name again to Kelly & Nichols and ultimately Kelly Nichols & Blayney.

Penman Johnson was able to trace its history back to 1912 when Frank Penman opened offices in Holborn, London.  The firm moved to Watford in the 1920’s and became known as Penman Johnson & Ewins following the arrival of two new partners.

During the inter war years the firm grew and its prosperity was enhanced by the development of housing on the Cassiobury and Tudor estates by a developer who was an established client of the firm.  Another of the firm’s big clients was a large building society.

For a number of years the firm occupied premises known as Carlton Chambers, opposite the Palace theatre in Clarendon Road but it sold this site in 1981 when the firm moved to the current premises.  A few years later the name “Ewins” was dropped to become Penman Johnson.

In 1997 Penman Johnson acquired two local firms, Wallington Fabian & White and Graham White & Co (Watford) to enhance its presence in the town and consolidate and strengthen the non-contentious and litigation departments respectively.
